I do sneak around a lot more when I go to the supermarket — it’s kind of ridiculous. I’ve found the best thing to do is try to avoid eye contact at all costs till someone says, ‘Hey, I know who you are. You’re Zac.’ I just try not to draw attention to myself. If people come up to me and say, ‘Hey, you’re that kid that sings and dances, that High School Musical kid,’ I will just say ‘no’ and keep going.

Vanessa and I went to Coachella, the music festival out in the desert, earlier this year and I didn’t want to go as a VIP because that’s weird, I wanted to go and really be part of the festival. So I grew a mustache. We had two great days without being noticed before the paparazzi spotted us on the last day. I can go to a lot of places in Japan where people don’t recognize me, especially if I wear a mask.

Action’s cool — but that’s something that I feel like that is only really done well if you truly feel like the actor deserves it. I think when Liam Neeson does an action movie… it just fits and makes sense. Daniel Craig did Layer Cake before James Bond. I don’t think I’ve taken any of the preliminary steps yet. I can’t say if I was sitting in the audience today and I saw me in an action movie, it would quite make sense yet. But hopefully I’ll get there. I would love to, in time. I’m gonna try.

There is pressure from myself, I wouldn’t say I feel it externally from other people. It seems like it would have been fine if I’d just gone and done another musical or something. I think for my own sanity and to prove something to myself, I definitely have to diversify, try new things that are more challenging, that are perhaps scary and that have a good probability that I’ll fall flat on my face in the execution.

I really enjoy them. It’s not hard and by then you inevitably have a good relationship with the actress that you’re working with. That was the case with Amanda Crew in Charlie St Cloud. It was pleasurable for me.

It (old hair style) used to keep getting in my eyes, It was a serious hazard. Now when I’m working on a movie, it take a lot less to look after it. There’s a couple of people we don’t have to hire just to keep my hair out of my face.

Early on, they’re super itchy, super prickly. Vanessa was not a big fan. But now it’s really soft and she’s coming round,

They haven’t asked me yet… I think it’d be really fun. They’re doing a great job of the show. Yeah, absolutely; I’d love a role.

I met him at a Laker game. I’d sat down in seats and I looked down and there was a dude in a baseball hat and I went, ‘Holy s***, that’s Leo!’ I was like, ‘Man, I’m not gonna interrupt you during the game, I know you wanna watch the Lakers. But if there’s any chance that I could just talk to you for a minute, whether we get coffee, anything dude.’ And he was like, ‘Dude, what are you doing tomorrow? Come over tomorrow — let’s hang out.’ That’s a little taste of how cool he is. He’s just very down to earth. He’s just an awesome dude. He’s been nice enough to hang out with me a few times.
