I was heartbroken. Absolutely gutted. But I also called him after he left,
— Steven Gerrard was upset with Torres leaving Liverpool for Chelsea / February 12, 2011
There are no hard feelings. I built up a relationship with Fernando and became his friend. He scored some fantastic goals and I have fantastic memories. I enjoyed playing with him. So you can't go from one extreme to another and fall out with him, start criticising him. But he will also understand how I feel. Fernando is a bright person and he will understand that the Liverpool fans are upset as well.

The football club is much happier now. It's in a better place than it has been for a few years. We've got new owners, who I've spoken to quite a lot, who are passionate about what they want to do.

I trust them, I trust them even more after what's happened in the last week or so. And the way they've acted, coming towards the end of the transfer window, has impressed me. I was a bit wary at first because I was maybe a bit guilty of trusting the previous owners too much. This time I've taken a bit more time in judging them. But they've been brilliant so far. They have put the club back in a good place already and the last three or four weeks have been really positive. We've had some good results. The lads are smiling again. I've actually enjoyed going to work again.

For me he is one of the best keepers in the world and he will certainly make up for that during the course of the season. He is worth a lot of points to this football club, there is no two ways about it. I'm not making excuses but he was unlucky and I think the sun played a big part. But somewhere down the line, we will be winning 1-0 or drawing and he will make a world class save - that's what he does. There is no finger pointing here. Everyone can walk away from the game with their heads held high and be proud of the performance.
— Steven Gerrard believes Pepe Reina is still one of the best goal keepers in the world despite his error in their opening season match against Arsenal / August 16, 2010

It was a bit of a downer for Joe but he shook everyone's hand and thanked them for the performance after he'd gone off. I think he was a bit unlucky to get a red card. A yellow would have been sensible. But if you make those tackles in front of the away supporters, it influences the referee and that's what happened.
— Steven Gerrard feels Joe Cole's red card is a little bit unlucky in Liverpool's season opener against Arsenal / August 16, 2010
I thought we were very unlucky not to see it out and take maximum points. I'm very proud of the lads and we all put a tremendous shift in. It's tough enough playing Arsenal when it's 11 versus 11. To lose a man with a half to go and still get something out of the game is very pleasing. We were disciplined, I thought we looked very fit and I thought we played some good stuff. There are a lot of positives to take, it's just a shame we didn't see it through. If we continue to show that fighting spirit and attitude, we will be in for a really good season but we need to show it week in, week out, not just against Arsenal.

The club have made a good appointment in Roy Hodgson. Rafa left a few weeks ago and I know the club were determined to take their time and get the right man for the job. Roy is hugely experienced and I believe he is the right man for Liverpool. I think it's been worth the wait and I'm sure he's just keen now to get on with it and start to quickly put in place his plans for the new season.
