I have to gain weight, I can’t be one of those people that never does it. I would go crazy. I like food too much, I like alcohol too much, I like ice cream too much. I could never live like that. It would be so profoundly boring to always be strict with myself.

I always feel closest to my father, who was the love of my life until his death in 2002, when I am in the kitchen,

I can still hear him over my shoulder, heckling me, telling me to be careful with my knife, moaning with pleasure over a bite of something in only the way a Jew from Long Island can, his shoulders doing most of the talking. I will never forget how concentrated he looked in the kitchen. It was as if the deliciousness of the food would convey the love he felt in direct proportion. Health food was never really on the agenda, it was about fun and deliciousness and togetherness..The most striking aspect about his cooking was how much joy he derived from feeding people that he loved. I mean, genuine, bursting happiness.

This book is meant to channel the ethos of my father by sharing the greatest gifts that he imparted to me. Invest in what’s real. Clean as you go. Drink while you cook. Make it fun. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It will be what it will be.

I suffered a pretty severe Tibial plateau fracture a few years ago (requiring surgery) which lead the orthopaedic surgeon to give me a bone scan, at which point it was discovered I had the beginning stages of osteopenia. This led my western/eastern doctors in New York to test my Vitamin D levels, which turned out to be the lowest they had ever seen, not a good thing. I went on a prescription strength level of Vitamin D and was told to… spend a bit of time in the sun!

This 26-minute long video was an amazing start for getting the butt and legs I had always hoped for. This regime got me into the shape of my life and I continue to return to it when I have a specific event so that I can do ridiculous things like be a 37-year-old mother-of-two and wear shorts!

To really get in line, I follow her strict diet for five days to lose my extra winter weight. Now, I am not a good dieter and I cannot every do it for long — only when there is a goal in sight, which there was in this case.

I think that I really got a lot happier when I realized that, as corny as it sounds, the simplest things in life have made me so happy, like slowing down, cooking for my family, having kids that are healthy,

The relationships that you have make you happy… I mean, it’s great to have success, it’s great to have money. I don’t want to give it away, but I know that if it was taken away, if I had my family, I would be okay. I guess I’m not scared the way I was in my 20s, when I thought it was all about success and I had to be a successful person.
