I’m not sitting on a soapbox telling women what they should and shouldn’t do. I just know what works for me. I’d be too frightened about what it means long-term. Looking at women in their 20s doing this stuff, in the end all you see is the work. It doesn’t fill me with admiration; it fills me with pity.

I’m not focused on what other people think of me. Some people get you and some people don’t, and to spend your life trying to make people understand how deep and complex and varied you are — I think that way lies madness.

Personally, I’d love to turn into a chameleon. I love watching performances that aren’t hampered by all that personal baggage from real life. That’s why I wonder if I’ve exposed too much of Cate Blanchett instead of the women I’ve played.

It’s nice to talk about being a mother, my wonderful husband and blah, blah, blah. But at the end of the day I’d rather people focus on my work. I couldn’t be what I call one of those ‘personality performers’ who expect you to see them and not a character on the screen.

I find it excruciating to watch myself. It’s sort of akin to watching your home videos, but doing it in public. There’s always a moment where you feel like you’ve got your pants around your ankles. I guess it’s the desire to become better that keeps one going.

I used a lot of mud. I would come down to the set relatively clean and pick something off the ground and smear it on myself. A fetish? I’m not quite sure!

I haven’t had anything done, but who knows. Andrew said he’d divorce me if I did anything. When you’ve had children, your body changes; there’s history to it… I think it’s important not to eradicate it. I look at someone’s face and I see the work before I see the person. I personally don’t think people look better when they do it; they just look different.

I had to do a lot of stunts which certainly tested me. Ridley said, ‘You can do it if you’re game for it.’ If someone sets you a challenge like that you’re not going to turn around and say, ‘No I’m not.’ I did a lot of horse riding. I wouldn’t say I’m a master horsewoman but I do like riding a horse. And they are film horses so they’re pretty well trained. It was a thrill in the end.
